Top Stories of 2015: Number 10 – Public Prayer

For the last 10 days of 2015, the Angus Reid Institute is counting down our top 10 stories of the year, based on the total number of page views they received at angusreid.org. This is number 10.


In April this year the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that city council meetings cannot begin with a prayer as this infringes on freedom of conscience and religion. The Angus Reid Institute asked Canadians what they thought of this ruling and found a nation divided, 56% were in favour of the court’s decision while 44% were opposed.

Canadians were considerably less divided on another question relating to religion in public life. The vast majority said Canada should keep the reference to “God” in our national anthem.
