Top Stories of 2015: Number 2 – Bill C-51

For the last 10 days of 2015, the Angus Reid Institute is counting down our top 10 stories of the year, based on the total number of pageviews they received at angusreid.org. This is number 2.

In response to the Parliament Hill shooting in October 2014, the Harper government proposed Bill C-51, a series of comprehensive changes to the way Canada’s law enforcement agencies collect and share information.

In February, the Angus Reid Institute asked Canadians about the bill and several of its key provisions, and found that four-in-five Canadians (82%) said they supported the proposed law, though almost as many (69%) said it required additional oversight provisions.

By May, months of protests had increased awareness of the bill significantly, and a follow-up ARI survey showed that the more aware Canadians were of the bill, the less likely they were to support it.
