Story 8 – The Royals (briefly) come to Canada

Some lighter news also captured Canadian imaginations and attention this year. In January it was announced that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – were not only seeking to partially quit the Royal Family but also take up part-time residence in Canada. Canadians followed the news closely but expressed concerns about potentially footing the bill for the Royals’ security as they settled on Vancouver Island. To the relief of taxpayers and the disappointment of some monarchy enthusiasts, the stay was short-lived; the couple departed to live in California in March after the pandemic hit, citing concerns about cross-border travel and a desire to be closer to Meghan’s mother who lives in Los Angeles.
