It was a big year for plant-based meat products both in Canada and globally, as products like Beyond Meat spread from restaurant to restaurant, and competitors joined[1] in on the action. In the minds of younger Canadians, this is a trend that will only continue to grow, while those 35 years of age and older are divided about whether this will be a fad. But what does it mean for Canada? In Alberta, where Canada’s beef industry is primarily concentrated[2], pessimism about the economic impact of more plant-based proteins (35%) outpaces optimism (21%). However, the rest of the country views the trend as more positive than negative for the economy.
