Jan. 19, 2024 – As Republicans endure a frigid mid-winter primary process, the result is all but settled. Barring a stunning turn of events, the presidential election in 2024 will feature a repeat of the 2020 contest: Donald Trump versus Joe Biden.
But that’s not the chilling part. It is the prospect of what happens, or doesn’t happen, after the ballots are counted. Data released this week by the Angus Reid Institute reveal that merely one-third of those polled in the United States say they’ll accept the election results no matter who wins. Fewer than one-in-five Americans say the necessary safeguards are in place to prevent fraud and cheating. These are the repercussions of Trump poisoning a nation against its own democratic pillars.
This level of mistrust in the U.S. elections process should prompt a wake-up call on this side of the border. A moment for our federal leaders to assess, or reassess, their own tactics ahead of the next election here. In particular, the Liberals would do well to shelve their current attempts to compare Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre to Trump (the prime minister referring to “MAGA Conservatives” in question period, for instance, or recent Liberal Twitter posts). It is desperate, unnecessary and dangerous.
