Story 3 – The New NAFTA

The renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement traveled a rocky road. The process was contentious, and characterized by missed deadlines and threats of withdrawals from U.S. President Donald Trump. Early in 2018 Canadian officials were reportedly convinced the President would pull the plug on negotiations. After more than a year of negotiations, tariffs, and tiffs, the three nations finally came together at the end of September to reach an accord, signing the agreement in late November.

For their part, Canadians were less than ecstatic about the deal, feeling the government was too soft in negotiations. Equal proportions of the population were pleased (30%) and disappointed (32%) while one-in-five were uncertain (21%).
